Even when we are at our best, most of us find it difficult to get enough sleep. We’ve heard all the tips: exercise, eating well, sleeping in complete darkness, finding a routine at night, meditation, no computer after a certain hour, don’t drink alcohol, drink less caffeine, etc. But with so many tips on getting adequate (and quality) sleep, how do we know what’s right or the right combination? Some of us still may have trouble falling asleep. Even if we do all of them, we may not be guaranteed to get the sleep that supports optimal health. That’s where sleep supplements enter the picture.
Deciding How Much Sleep You Need
We all need to recharge, but some of us do it more efficiently than others. The traditional 8 hours a night may not be the right amount for everyone. Some people are fine on 6 or 7, and some people may need 9 hours. There are hundreds of theories about the number of hours for optimal sleep, but one part of this is true for everyone: proper sleep can do a lot in the way of good health; from appetite to attitude, it has a profound effect.
One suggestion is to compile a list of all the factors in your day that might affect sleep, such as diet or work stress. Then do some in-depth research on other, hidden factors-like backlit screen use before bed, or drinking later than 5pm. Everyone has different chemistry and, therefore, different health needs, including how much sleep they need. Once you have determined this and tried everything that seems to help, it may be time to turn to supplements if you are still having trouble sleeping.
One supplement that isn’t a well-known sleep aid is the amino acid L-Theanine, which has been shown to promote deep muscle relaxation and improved quality of sleep.* It’s known for its calming effects in the brain and is shown to support increased concentration and focus while reducing irritability.* DaVinci® uses Suntheanine® brand L-Theanine, which means it is 100% pure L-Theanine in a patented, pharmaceutical grade form.
Valer Amino™ is a dietary supplement to support muscle relaxation and normal sleep.* It contains a combination of valerian root, amino acids, herbs, and B vitamins to aid in relaxation.* Anxiety, stress, and panic increases the body’s production of adrenaline. Valer Amino™ is a highly specialized formula designed to support feelings of calmness.* This sleep supplement contains herbs that support quality REM sleep and promote relaxation, which helps the body to cope with stress.*
Another supplement option is 5-HTP. Known for supporting normal serotonin levels, 5-HTP also supports general feelings of comfort and well being, as well as sleep quality.* Serotonin balances other hormones involved in sleep quality, such as melatonin.* Studies with 5-HTP show it supports REM and deep sleep, thereby making daytime more enjoyable!*
